A turn-based war over the whole continent

Strategic Command: American Civil War puts you in charge of the Union or the Confederacy from 1861 onward. You handle armies, research, production and diplomatic policy, and your decisions decide whether the United States comes out of the conflict as one nation or two. The map is a 66,000 hex grid covering North America from Canada and New Mexico down to the Caribbean at a 15km/9mi scale, the largest hex map the series has offered. Six campaigns run from the first shot to the last, including 1861 Blue and Gray, 1862 Scott's Great Snake, 1863 Lee Rides North and 1864 Make Georgia Howl, plus the alternate-history 1862 Trent War, which asks what happens if the UK recognizes the Confederacy.

Building and leading your forces

Few professional soldiers exist at the start of 1861, so raising an army matters as much as fighting with one. Volunteers enlist in thousands and you organise them into Brigades, Divisions and eventually Corps, then research better weaponry and training. Once trained, you pick from generals such as Lee, Jackson, Grant, McClellan, Beauregard and Sherman to lead them, and with whole armies hinging on single battles the choice matters. Reconnaissance is reworked: without radio, cavalry finds the enemy and avoids ambushes, while scout detachments, partisan rangers, armoured trains and observation balloons extend what you can see through the fog of war. Rivers like the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland are navigable by river warships with inland ports for fast movement, and the naval side splits ships into rivercraft, coastal and sea-going vessels in wooden and ironclad construction. Fortresses guard key ports and waterways, and their positions are known to both sides.

Playing it with friends and things to check first

The game supports Online PvP and Remote Play Together, so you can take the Union and the Confederacy against each other or share a session. It is turn-based, so matches move at the pace of the players rather than in real time. Diplomacy runs alongside the fighting: action on the battlefield and decision events such as the sale of the Confederate Cotton Stockpile or the Emancipation Proclamation affect whether the UK, France or Spain intervene, and French involvement in Mexico can open a second front where you take up the flag of the Republic or the Empire. New unit types include balloons, rangers, monitors and river gunboats, with technologies such as Naval Engines, Ironclads, Skirmishers and the Field Telegraph. Official mods add two new map styles alongside the classic look, an Editor lets you build your own campaigns or mods, and partisan scripts, historical event popups and the European intervention mechanic can each be switched off with a single event.
