What Scourge Of War - Remastered is

This is a real-time 3D command simulation from Norb Software Development LLC, headed by Norb Timpko, who also designed the Take Command series. You take command of army units and refight historical clashes from the age of regimental warfare. The genre is real time command simulation, a line that runs from Sid Meier's Gettysburg in 1997 through Sid Meier's Antietam, Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle, Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory, Civil War: Bull Run, and Take Command: 2nd Manassas. The series itself recreates Gettysburg and Waterloo. This remaster fixes issues from the earlier releases, rebrands the game, upgrades the art, improves performance, adds improvements to the graphics engine and a large number of next generation art assets, and builds on the AI experience from the previous games.

How a group plays it together

The game uses Steam multi-player features, so you can match your skills against human opponents anywhere in the world, against the AI, or against both at once. Online Co-op and Online PvP are both supported, and the Team-Based tag means you can split a group across sides. Combat runs in real time with no turns; the only way to stop it is to pause the entire game. That matters when several people are playing at once, since a pause affects everyone.

What to know before starting

The AI is smarter, meaner, and more likely to run you off the battlefield unless you are a skilled wargamer, so expect a hard fight even on your own. Terrain matters: the rolling ground outside of Sharpsburg is called deceptively rolling for a reason, and the series has always paid careful attention to historical detail. The game carries a Tutorial tag, so there is material to work through before you commit a group to a full battle. It is a wargame in the hex-free, dice-free tradition, built on 3D battlefields where you move units yourself rather than resolving combat through rolls.
