What Field of Glory II Medieval is
Field of Glory II Medieval is a turn-based tactical wargame set in the High Middle Ages, from 1040 AD to 1270 AD, designed by Richard Bodley Scott. You command medieval armies on tile-based battlefields where positioning, formation and timing decide the fight. Battles can run from a few units up to 80 units per side, and named generals sit with your troops, influencing combat and morale. The period covered is the heyday of the mounted knight: armoured from head to toe by the later 12th century, European knights rode heavy horses in tight formation and delivered a devastating charge with couched lances.
The game covers 29 nations and factions of North and Central Europe, from the Anglo-Saxons and Normans through France, Germany, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Low Countries, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Bohemia, Poland, the Teutonic Knights, the Old Prussians and Lithuanians, Russia, Hungary, the Cumans, the Volga Bulgars and the Mongols. There are 57 army lists giving historically realistic forces for each faction at different dates, plus contingents from historical allies, so matchups vary widely. More than 100 historically accurate troop units are built from fully animated 3D models, each with multiple variations.
Playing together
Multiplayer battle modes let you play against a human opponent instead of the AI, in historical matchups or custom setups. Quick Battle mode gives you 65 pre-set matchups between historical opponents, which is the fastest route into a game together. Custom Battle lets you build your own "what-if" scenario: pick the armies from the researched lists, choose from 12 scenario types such as Open Battle, Flank March, Rearguard, Kill the King, Escort Baggage Train or defending and relieving a besieged fortress, and fight on terrain produced by the random map generator. Remote Play Together is available, so one person can host and others join in.
Before you start
Battles are classic turn-based, tile-based play with an interface that is easy to pick up but hard to master, and the AI makes sound tactical decisions across 6 difficulty levels. If you want a longer run of games, the campaign system keeps the focus on battles rather than moving armies across a strategic map: four historically-based campaigns cover the Angevin Empire, the Northern Crusades, Alexander Nevsky and the Mongol Invasions, and a sandbox campaign lets you lead any nation and its historical allies against any other. Core units gain experience and elan with each victory and can be given their own names. Historical scenarios include Hastings 1066, Tinchebrai 1106, Bouvines 1214, Kalka River 1223, Lake Peipus 1242 and Kressenbrunn 1260. The system is mod friendly and includes a built-in map editor.
