What 这是谐音梗 is about
这是谐音梗 is a word game built around visual puns. Each round shows you a strange picture — say, a piece of ginger making a heart shape — and you have to read it literally to land on the phrase it stands for. In that case: 将心比心. The joke works because the answer is absurd on first glance and completely obvious once someone says it out loud. That gap between "what am I looking at" and "oh, that's it" is the whole game, and it's why the format spread so far online.
There's a lot to chew through: 1000 official questions in the main line, plus 300 more across themed areas, plus whatever the community keeps adding through the workshop. Expect to spend a while before you run dry.
Playing with friends
The game supports online co-op and online PvP for 2 to 8 players, so it works both as a team-effort guessing session and as a head-to-head mess. The interesting bit is that people don't all think in the same direction — someone who reads the picture literally will beat someone who tries to be clever about it, and watching your friends confidently pitch the wrong answer is most of the entertainment.
There's also a mode called "禁止谐音梗" — no puns allowed — designed for groups of three or more. It flips the format into a cooperative game where you're not solving puns but dodging them, which gives you an excuse to set traps for the people you're playing with.
Making your own
The workshop lets you upload questions you've made yourself, so the puzzle pool keeps growing and the quality swings wildly in the best way. If you've ever looked at one of these pun images and thought you could do better, this is where you put that to the test against everyone else.
Before you start
Bring friends who read Chinese comfortably, since the answers hinge on homophones and wordplay that don't survive translation. Playing alone works fine for practice, but the game clearly shines when a room of people argues over whether a picture of something is a 成语, a phrase, or just nonsense — until someone hits the answer and everyone groans.
