A found-footage maze in a condemned school

The Classrooms is a first-person survival horror game built around procedural generation. In 1996, Robert Chen carries his VHS camcorder into a newly condemned public school to investigate the disappearances of several students, including his younger sister. Almost immediately he becomes lost in a senseless, seemingly infinite maze of halls and classrooms. What you play through is the tape he left behind, so the whole experience is framed as found footage recorded on a camcorder.

The world is fully procedural, with billions of possible layouts and procedural elements, so no two runs hand you the same corridors, items, or oddities. The setting leans into liminal spaces and a period atmosphere drawn from the 1980s and 1990s, with surreal, atmospheric horror rather than action set pieces.

Playing it together with friends

The game supports online co-op, so your group can explore the same generated school as a team. Each of you picks up items, codex entries, keys, and equipment as you go, and the items available to one player may not be the same items available to another, which makes splitting up and comparing finds worthwhile.

Proximity voice is the feature that shapes co-op most. Sound from your input device reaches the game world, so talking loudly can give away your position to certain entities. That cuts both ways: staying quiet keeps you hidden, but you can also use your voice deliberately as a tool. Coordination over voice chat therefore becomes part of the survival loop rather than something separate from it.

What to know before you start

Entities are the main threat, and they are not interchangeable. Each one has its own deep and unique set of mechanics, ranging from harmless oddities to extremely dangerous threats. Working out how a given entity behaves through careful investigation is what keeps you alive, so treat early encounters as information gathering rather than something you can brute force.

The game is in Early Access, which means it is still being built out. The developers plan to add new entities, new anomalous objects, improved procedural generation, new levels, new story elements, gameplay improvements, and language localization over time. Expect the content pool and the variety of situations you run into to grow as development continues.
