A co-op platform adventure built for two

It Takes Two is a platform adventure from Hazelight Studios made purely for cooperative play. You play as Cody and May, a clashing couple turned into dolls by a magic spell. Trapped in a fantastical world where the unpredictable hides around every corner, they are reluctantly challenged with saving their fractured relationship. The story mixes heartfelt moments with comedy, and the narrative and gameplay are woven together into one metaphorical experience. Every level introduces new and connected character abilities to master, so the way you and your partner handle obstacles keeps changing as you go.

How your group plays it together

This is a two-player game, so you need one friend alongside you. Friend's Pass lets you invite a friend to join for free, and Remote Play Together is another way to bring someone in. You can play on the couch with split-screen or online co-op. Working together is the only way forward: the challenges are designed so that each player has something the other needs, and the levels throw ever-changing problems at you both. Along the way you will face rampaging vacuum cleaners, suave love gurus, gangster squirrels, a pair of underpants you pilot, a buzzing night club to DJ, and a bobsleigh run through a magical snow globe. There are also minigames and laugh-out-loud moments between the bigger set pieces.

What to know before starting

Expect a full campaign rather than a menu of separate modes, and expect it to demand communication and coordination from both players the whole way through. The tone shifts between funny and emotional, and the story centers on Cody and May learning to overcome their differences alongside a diverse cast of strange and endearing characters. The game is developed by Hazelight, a Stockholm studio founded in 2014 by Josef Fares, known for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and the co-op-only A Way Out. It Takes Two won GAME OF THE YEAR at The Game Awards 2021. Pick a time when both of you can sit down together, since progress depends on the pair of you playing as one team.
