What BOKURA is
BOKURA is a side-scrolling puzzle adventure for exactly two players. You play as two boys who run away from home, meet a dead deer, and pass out. When they wake up, they no longer see the same world: one of them sees a world of animals, the other sees a world of machines. The same character can look like a picture-book animal on one screen and a robot on the other, and interactable objects can even move differently for each of you. The story follows the boys as they try to work out what happened to them and get back to the world they knew. The whole run takes around three to four hours.
How two people play it together
It cannot be played alone. There is no singleplayer mode and no computer-controlled second player: two people, two separate machines, no more and no less. Online co-op is supported, so you can play from different locations, but the game does not include any built-in voice chat. You need your own way to talk, like a Discord call, because talking to each other is the core mechanic. Half the puzzle is describing what only you can see while listening to what only your partner can see, then agreeing on what to do. Along the way you hit critical choices that send the journey in different directions, so those decisions are made together too.
Before you start
Pick your partner first — that is genuinely the first choice the game gives you. Make sure you both have the game and a working voice channel set up before you launch, since the game itself will not connect you verbally. Expect a lot of "wait, what do you see?" moments; that confusion is the design, not a bug. The tone leans emotional and atmospheric with pixel graphics, and it touches on heavier material, so it suits a quiet session with someone you actually want to talk to rather than a big group night. It is currently in Early Access.
