What Captain Forever Trilogy is

Captain Forever Trilogy collects three games: Captain Forever, Captain Successor, and Captain Impostor. Forever is the original, award winning one and stays vanilla. Successor adds a lot of new modules and ship types. Impostor changes the formula by letting you instantly clone any of the game's enormous, fantastical ships. All three run on a new renderer that makes the whole thing faster, slicker, and shinier, with new audio and new wing shaped modules that open up more room for good looking ships and considered design. Acclaimed novelist Cassandra Khaw rewrote most of the game's text and added plenty more, so the Captain Forever universe now reads like an actual universe.

Building while you fly

There is no separate editor screen. You build your ship while you are already flying it. Blast an enemy ship apart, grab a piece with your mouse, and bolt it straight onto your own hull. That is the whole loop: build, fly, build, shoot, build. Everything is physically simulated, so where you put a part genuinely changes how the ship handles and how it fights. A lopsided design flies lopsided. This is why the new wing shaped modules matter — they give you more ways to balance a ship or make it deliberately strange.

Playing together

The Steam version supports Remote Play Together, so a friend can join your session over a network connection rather than needing their own copy. Set that up from your platform's interface before you start. Beyond that, the games are built around singleplayer flight and combat, so the shared experience is watching each other's ships come apart and get rebuilt mid-fight.

Before you start

Expect a top-down 2D shooter with sandbox building and physics at its core, not a fixed progression of preset ships. Your first designs will fly badly, and that is part of it — salvage from enemies is your main source of parts, so losing a fight still leaves you with something to bolt on. The three games differ in how much variety they throw at you: start with Forever to learn the basics, then move to Successor for the wider parts catalogue, then Impostor when you want to clone the big ships instead of building from scratch.
