A bullet-hell boss rush with a bite

Yars: Recharged is a top-down twin-stick shooter built around 60 unique enemy encounters. You attack the enemy homeworld, where mechanical hives fire cannons and swirling missiles at you. The core loop is a mix of distance and daring: stay back to find pockets of safety in the incoming fire, then dart forward to nibble away at the hive's defenses. Destroying the enemy's shields gathers energy, and with enough of it you can power up the Zorlon cannon, which sends searing blasts of golden energy into the hive. The game leans on visual and audio cues to warn you of impending danger, so you need to learn the rhythm of each boss as the defenses get more complex.

Playing together

Yars: Recharged is a local co-op game in both arcade and mission mode, so you and a friend can take on the encounters side by side. Remote Play Together is available, which lets a friend join over the internet as if they were sitting next to you. Co-op is a big change from the original and is meant to be shared with a friend rather than played alone.

Modes and rules before you start

Arcade mode is a boss rush of 30 enemies. It is not endless, but it is very difficult to reach the end. You die after three hits, and that hit count resets when you move to the next fight. Missions mode has 30 unique, challenging bosses and only one life to beat each. There is one global leaderboard for mission mode, so you need to be on your game. Bosses can be taken head on with a barrage of bullets, or you can start with the smaller Minor Cores first and work your way to the boss. Minor Cores drop power-ups when attached, and the type of power-up is tied to the core that dropped it: shoot in all directions at once, rapid fire, explosive shots, or a railgun. The soundtrack is by Megan McDuffee, and the game is by Adamvision Studios and SneakyBox, the team behind the Atari Recharged series.
