Two detectives, one case

Unboxing the Cryptic Killer is a point-and-click puzzle game built for exactly two players. You take the roles of Ally and Old Dog, two detectives who have been hunting the Cryptic Killer and finally walk into his trap. Two innocent lives are on the timer, and the only way out is a box of puzzles the killer built himself. This is the first standalone chapter of the Cryptic Killer series, and it plays out as a hand-illustrated, noir-flavoured mystery you work through together rather than alone.

How the pair plays it

The two of you are separated during the case. Each player sees different items and different clues, so neither of you ever has the full picture on your own. Every puzzle is split into halves: you describe what is in front of you, your partner describes theirs, and between you the code gets cracked. That makes talking constantly the core mechanic, not a nice extra. The game runs with online co-op, and it needs an internet connection plus voice communication to work at all, so sort out a call before you start.

What to know before you start

Each player needs their own copy of the game, and it runs on mobile, tablet, PC or Mac. It is a two-player game and nothing else, so you need exactly one partner lined up. The puzzles are collaborative and meant to test how clearly you can explain what you are looking at, so expect some back-and-forth before things click. The world is hand-drawn and 2D, with a cartoony, family-friendly look despite the crime subject matter.

Notes and scribbles

You get a notebook and pen at any point during the game. Use it: jot down codes, sketch what your partner describes, and scribble directly on the environment to mark what you have already tried. In a game where half the information lives on someone else's screen, writing things down is often what keeps the case moving.
