What Super Indie Karts is
Super Indie Karts is a retro kart racer in the style of 16-bit and 64-bit games from the '90s. The 16-bit Super tracks are flat and fast with tight, almost claustrophobic layouts and short draw distance, while the 64-bit Ultra tracks are low poly, open, and full of anti-gravity sections that corkscrew and loop into the sky. The roster currently holds over 30 characters drawn from indie games, and the track list sits at 48: 32 Super, 12 Ultra, and 4 Advanced, spread across 4 speed classes plus mirror mode. Expect pixel graphics, optional 1992-style screen curvature and motion blur, and pop-in that is part of the intended look.
Playing together
The main group modes are Splitscreen Grand Prix for 2, 3, or 4 players on one screen, and Battle Mania, which runs across 9 arenas after a recent overhaul. Grand Prix works in mirror mode too, so a group can replay the same cup flipped. Outside of splitscreen there is Quick Race, Time Trials, and Mission Mania for solo runs. Remote Play Together is supported, so one person can host and others join over the network. Combat is a constant on the track: pickups include Meloons, Exploding Pangapples, Slippy Gelatos, Heat Seeking Loconuts, Giant Halloween Pumpkings, Mutant Tomms, Beeta Blockas, and three strengths of Chilli Boost. Getting hit spins you out, so positioning matters as much as speed.
Before you start
This is Early Access, so content is still being added: more characters, tracks, and features are expected over the coming months, with 16 more tracks planned beyond the current 48. The game was Kickstarted in late 2014 and has no confirmed completion date yet. Achievements and unlocks are in place to work through alongside the racing. The retro quirks are deliberate: trees and obstacles can appear a few yards ahead of you, and the Super tracks are small and tight by design. If your group wants the wider, looping courses, look for the Ultra tracks specifically.
