Falling blocks with a color-matching twist

Raining Blobs is a fast-paced arcade puzzle game about matching falling blocks. Blocks of the same color link together when matched, and blocks with stars in them destroy whatever is linked. That gives each round two things to watch at once: what is stacking up and where a star block will land to clear it. The cast is made up of female protagonists drawn in an anime-inspired pixel art style, and the whole thing runs on quick decisions rather than slow planning.

Playing together in a group

Local multiplayer supports up to 8 players in co-op or versus, so a group sitting around one setup can split into teams or go head to head. Adding CPUs brings the total to 16, which is useful when the group is smaller than the roster you want to fill. Remote Play Together is available, so friends who are not in the same room can join a session. The pace is fast enough that a versus round gives everyone something to react to, and co-op works for players who would rather hold a shared line together than fight over it.

Modes to work through

Arcade, Endless Battle, Tournament and Puzzle modes each give the group a different shape of session. Tournament mode advances through a series of battles and carries a story along with it, which suits a group working through it in order. Puzzle mode is a set of specific board problems to solve, better for players who want to sit with one layout and figure it out. Endless Battle is the survival option for as long as the blob rain holds out. All four modes feed into the leaderboards, and there are achievements to collect along the way, plus a good amount of stats to look at after a session.

Before you start

Expect a game that rewards reading the board quickly and placing blocks deliberately, since a star block only pays off if the right colors are already linked. New players may want a few rounds in Puzzle mode to get a feel for how linking and clearing work before jumping into a full versus match. Check that everyone has a controller ready for local play, and confirm the Remote Play Together setup before the group commits to a session.
