What Hyper Jam is

Hyper Jam is a top-down arena brawler where up to four players fight in fast, close-quarters rounds. You pick from a roster of '80s-inspired characters and take them into arenas that range from a sun-drenched Miami hotel rooftop to a gritty Neo-Tokyo subway. Combat is built around lethal weapons: katanas, rocket launchers, sledgehammers and more. The controls are easy to pick up, but there is real depth in movement, timing and positioning once you start trying to outplay the people you know.

How a group plays it together

You can fight locally with controllers in the same room, or open a private lobby on Steam and add friends from your list alongside local players and bots. Cross-platform matchmaking is there too, so a pair of local players can test themselves against others online. Between rounds the perk draft happens: everyone picks a new perk that stays with them for the rest of the game, stacking and combining with what they already have. A wide pool of distinctive perks means builds diverge quickly, and no two games play the same way. That drafting step is where a session gets its shape, since the perks you grab decide how aggressive or defensive your next rounds will be.

Before you start

If your group is new, spend some time against AI bots first. Bot difficulty, game rules and other settings are adjustable, so you can set up a gentle introduction or a proper challenge before going online. Expect a violent, fast-paced game with gore and a heavy synthwave soundtrack from Carpenter Brut, Dance With The Dead, Meteor and others driving the pace. The matches are short and round-based, and the perk stacking means a losing start can turn around, so a session tends to run as a long series of rematches rather than one decisive fight.
