What Retrograde Arena is

Retrograde Arena is a top-down twin stick shooter where bullets don't kill you directly. The environment does. You fly a customizable Drone around neon-lit arenas and use weapons to shove opponents into hazards, off ledges, or into the path of scenery. Every shot has recoil, so firing also moves you. Learning to steer with that recoil is the core skill: use it to dodge, to close distance, or to launch yourself across the map for a body slam. Weapons come with different properties — area of effect, ricochet, reflection, brute force — and each one has situations where it works better than others. Some arenas have switches that move pieces of the layout, tight corridors where one bad move ends your run, and corners you can drift around to finish someone off.

Playing it with your group

You can play against friends, strangers, or AI. Online matches hold up to 6 players, and each PC supports up to 4 controllers for local play, so people on the same machine can join an online match together. There's also LAN play if your group is on the same network. Three game modes are available: Supersizer has you fighting Giant Monster Drones, King of the Crown is about claiming and holding the crown, and Last Drone Standing is a survival round against an onslaught. The modes ask for different approaches, so a group that likes varied rounds can rotate through them. More modes are planned while the game is in Early Access.

Before you start

Expect a physics game more than a traditional shooter. Kills come from positioning and knockback rather than depleting a health bar, so time spent learning recoil control and weapon impact pays off faster than raw aim. Each arena has its own layout and quirks, and some demand specific strategies to navigate, so a few rounds are needed before the maps feel familiar. Drones can be personalized with textures, thrusters, and particle effects, which is handy when several players share one screen and you need to tell yourself apart in the middle of a firefight.
