A puzzle platformer about a cat and its toast
CATO: Buttered Cat is a 2D puzzle platformer built around the buttered cat paradox: cats land on their feet, toast lands buttered side down, so strap them together and you get a spinning, floating perpetual motion machine. You control both characters at once. The cat runs left and right, climbs scratching boards, and slips through pipes, while the toast flies like a projectile. Hold down to power up a shot so the toast jumps farther. Bring the two together to trigger the paradox and reach places neither could get to alone. The game has over 140 main levels, more than 60 side levels, five worlds full of contraptions like toasters, buttered trampolines, and space pipes, plus hidden rooms, boss battles, and mini-games.
Playing together with friends
The Steam features list Remote Play Together, so a friend can join your session over the internet. The tags also include Local Multiplayer and Local Co-Op. The core of the game is solving puzzles by coordinating the cat and the toast, so playing with someone means splitting attention between the two characters and timing your moves together. Mini-games unlock as you progress and can be installed on the console in your hideout to play again whenever you like.
Before you start
This is a puzzle game with some action, not a demanding platformer. Most of the time you are thinking through a room rather than pulling off hard jumps, though enemies will show up and your abilities handle them. There are 70+ cat and toast skins to collect, and hidden rooms hold Easter eggs and drop items you can bring back to your hideout. The story is spread across the adventure in pieces rather than told up front. Controller support is listed, and the game is tagged Singleplayer as well, so you can play through it on your own. Team Woll built it as their first game over two years of remote collaboration.
