Trench warfare on the Western Front

Verdun is a multiplayer first-person shooter set on the Western Front between 1914 and 1918, inspired by the Battle of Verdun in 1916. Battles take place on maps based on real battlefields in France and Belgium, with trenches, no man's land, artillery barrages and gas attacks shaping every fight. Combat is deliberately unforgiving: weapons are handled with skill, each gun behaves differently, there are no floating crosshairs, and bullet physics are realistic. Close quarters are common, so a bayonet can matter as much as a rifle. Gas attacks force you to put on a mask that restricts your view, and artillery strikes send you diving for cover. Gore effects are optional.

Playing with your squad

Verdun is built around squads. There are 15 distinctive squad types representing soldiers from more than 5 countries, each with its own weapons and equipment, so your group can spread out across roles rather than everyone running the same loadout. The headline mode is Frontlines, where 64 players take turns going over the top to capture the opposing trench line, then switch to defending what they took. Momentum drives attack and counter-attack across a real-time dynamic frontline. Three other modes round things out: Attrition for tactical play, Rifle Deathmatch for skill-based dueling, and Squad Defense for relentless holding of ground.

Before you start

Expect a steep, punishing experience rather than a run-and-gun shooter. Aim matters, positioning matters, and dying quickly is part of the setting. Artillery and gas will interrupt you constantly, so keep an eye on the battlefield and get your mask on fast. The game leans hard into authenticity, from historically accurate uniforms and weapons to period music, sound design and war-torn terrain, all shaped by field research at the actual battlefields and advice from historians. It is part of the WW1 Game Series alongside Tannenberg, Isonzo and Gallipoli, each covering a different front of the war.
