A large-scale WW1 shooter on the Eastern Front

Tannenberg is a first-person shooter set on the Eastern Front of the First World War, with 64 players fighting over key sectors of the battlefield. The fighting takes place across lakes, forests, mountains and snowy plains, and the game is inspired by the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914, one of the most famous encirclement battles of the war. You pick a historical squad and take the field with authentic equipment: rifles, sabres, heavy machine guns, artillery barrages and poison gas all play a part, so keeping your gas mask close matters as much as your aim. The game carries the same attention to detail as Verdun, the first entry in the WW1 Game Series, with uniforms recreated down to small details and weapons modelled from exact references.

How your group plays together

Squad play is the core of the experience. You fight in a four-man squad, and each squad type brings its own distinctive skills, so coordinating with the people you came in with pays off. The Maneuver game mode is built for this: 64 players battle across large open maps where objectives and battle lines keep shifting, and you choose which sectors to attack and defend. Getting outflanked and encircled is a real risk, so moving as a group and watching the wider front matters as much as winning your own firefight. Seven squads are available across both sides, covering Russian Frontovik and Cossack squads, the Latvian Riflemen, Roumanian infantry, Austro-Hungarian K.u.K. units, German Infanterie and the Bulgarian rifle section. With full AI bot support in Maneuver, a group can jump into a full battle at any time rather than waiting for players to fill the match.

What to know before starting

There are eight large maps with weather variants ranging from snow to summer sun, and over 50 weapons to learn, so expect some time spent getting used to how each one handles. Long-range rifle fire rewards leading your shots, and close combat can start without warning, so staying alert is part of the loop. The game includes realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, gore and maps based on real battlefields, which sets a grim, grounded tone rather than a fast arcade one. Beyond the Eastern Front battles, the Gallipoli content extends the fighting to the Ottoman Fronts from the Gallipoli campaign to the wider Middle Eastern Fronts, and the free Ali Al Muntar expansion adds further content inspired by those fronts. Tannenberg sits alongside Gallipoli, Isonzo and Verdun in the WW1 Game Series, each covering a different front of the same war.
