A turn-based tactics RPG set in the late Han and Three Kingdoms
Three Kingdoms: Tide of Conquest is a strategy RPG built around grid battles and chapter-based scenarios. You move units across a square battlefield and win through positioning, terrain and unit matchups rather than raw force. Height differences, obstacles and facing all matter: a frontal assault can bleed your army dry, while a flank or a drawn-out trap does the work. Battles are turn-based, so there is time to read the field before you commit.
The first scenario, Wei Wu Hui Bian, follows Cao Cao as the point-of-view character through key moments such as the alliance of the lords, taking the emperor to control the realm, and the clash at Guandu. The story is told in chapter form and is meant to give each battle its context rather than sit as cutscenes between fights.
How it plays out
Combat has two distinct layers. On the map you command formations, adjusting your lines as you learn what the enemy brought, and coordinating strikes so units hit together. Separately, officer duels pull the camera in for a one-on-one mounted fight between two generals, a quick decisive contest outside the grid logic. Naval battles add a third flavour: warships replace cavalry, and arrows and ship movement give the water fights a different rhythm from land engagements.
The whole thing is drawn in a Chinese ink-wash style, with battlefields rendered as flowing painted scrolls from Guandu to Chibi, Changbanpo and Dingjun Mountain. Duels and ship combat lean into the same look, with ink waves and brush-stroke arrows.
Before you start
The game is free to play and tagged for both singleplayer and online play, with co-op and PvP listed among its Steam features. It is a 3D, stylized, turn-based tactics game with RPG and strategy systems layered on top, so expect to spend time on army composition and formation decisions as well as on the scenario story. The Peach Garden oath opens the narrative, and the scenario content described here covers the first released script, Wei Wu Hui Bian.
