A teen stuck in a magical world
The World Next Door follows Jun, a rebellious teenager who ends up far from home in Emrys, a magical and mysterious realm full of otherworldly creatures. She needs to get back to Earth before time runs out, and to do that she has to lean on the new friends she meets along the way. The game blends visual novel storytelling with fast puzzle battles, so a session moves between reading conversations and jumping into combat. Dialogue is a big part of the experience, and the story branches based on choices you make, with a reputation system that shapes how characters relate to Jun. The characters are anime-inspired designs by Lord Gris, and the whole thing has a colorful comic-book feel.
How a group plays it together
The main story is a singleplayer experience, so one person can drive the plot while others watch and weigh in on dialogue choices. For groups who want to play against each other, there is a Versus Mode where you can challenge your friends in the lightning-fast battles. The game also supports Remote Play Together, which lets friends join in over a connection rather than sitting at the same machine. Between the branching conversations and the versus matches, a group can split time between following Jun's story and squabbling over puzzle rounds.
What to know before starting
Combat is real-time and built around activating magical runes to cast spells, mixing puzzle combos with action. It moves quickly, so expect to think fast rather than take turns. If someone in the group cares more about the story than the battles, Assist Mode lets you focus on the narrative while still enjoying the gameplay. The game is tagged with PvP and choices matter, so decisions in conversations carry weight across the run. It is a 2D title heavy on dialogue, fantasy themes, and a female protagonist, which sets the tone before anyone touches a controller.
