What Roguefort is
Roguefort is a turn-based open-world roguelike RPG where your magic comes from cheesemaking. You play as an affineur on a continent where five great Guilds are on the verge of war. You can crawl dungeons, build a homestead, tame and ride animals, sail the coast, or switch to Fortress mode and run a colony of your own. Combat is turn-based, and you can fight with a two-handed sword or with cheese magic: blind enemies with a smoked gouda fog, heal yourself with a sunberry tomme, and experiment with recipes built from what you forage and raise. The land and ingredients you gather shape your magic, so where you settle matters.
Playing together
Co-op supports up to four players in one world. Together you can explore, build, raid dungeons, sail and quest. In single player, the Old Mouth trading hub lets you meet other players, trade, chat and send in-game mail. You can also build a home at sea: sail past coastal cities, go below deck, build a workbench, store supplies and fish from the railing.
Before you start
You pick Permadeath for a traditional roguelike challenge, or Wayfarer mode, where death has consequences but you continue with your character. You can switch between four graphical perspectives at any time: classic ASCII, pixel art, 2.5D isometric or first-person 3D, all running on the custom Opthalis Engine. Cantal's landscape is handcrafted, while its dungeons, encounters, weather and ecology change between runs; The Crossing gives you a newly generated continent each time, with its own history. In Fortress mode, time keeps moving while people work, and you can pause whenever you need to plan. Your choices lead to branching quests and different endings. Roguefort is in Early Access.
