A sandbox made for small kids

Play With Gilbert - Remake is a third-person sandbox game built for young children, ages 3 and up. You play as Gilbert, or you make your own kitty from scratch. The point is to wander around, poke at things and see what happens, rather than to chase a score. The controls are simple on purpose, so a kid who is still getting used to 3D games can move around a level without much trouble. Levels are child-friendly and open to exploration, and you can role-play in them however you like: eat a pizza, become a delivery cat, drive a car, take a hang glider through the air or go up in a balloon. Physics objects are scattered around to push, knock and play with, and there are other cat-friends to hang out with.

Playing together

The game runs in single-player or local co-op, where players work together to accomplish goals. Split screen and local multiplayer are supported, so two people can share one screen and explore the same level side by side. Remote Play Together is also available, which lets friends join over a connection as well. Since the cats are easy to control, younger players can keep up without the group slowing down to explain the basics. There is no pressure to fight or race; the shared activities are the ones you find lying around each level, like the vehicles, the delivery errands and the interactive objects.

Customizing your kitty and the world

Character customization is a big part of it. Fur types, hats, glasses and moods are among the options, and more of them unlock as you go, so each kitty can look distinct from Gilbert himself. The levels also change over time: there is a day and night cycle, and seasons run through spring, summer, autumn and winter based on the time of year or whenever you want to set them. That means the same level looks and feels different depending on when you visit it, which gives a reason to come back and explore again.

Before you start

Expect a relaxed pace with no combat and no fail states to worry about. It is aimed at ages 3 and up, so the tone stays light and the goals stay simple. Pick who plays which cat, decide whether you want day or night and which season you feel like, then head out and see what the level offers. Everything else is up to the group.
