A western revenge shooter remastered
Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster brings back the 1997 western FPS from LucasArts, rebuilt by Nightdive Studios, the team behind STAR WARS: Dark Forces Remaster. You play as James Anderson, an ex-Marshal whose wife was murdered and whose daughter was taken by outlaws, and the campaign follows him through the Wild West as he uncovers a plot of greed and corruption. Combat is first-person and ground-based, with five weapon types to work with: the .45 Revolver, Scoped .44 Rifle, 10-Gauge Shotgun, Sawed-Off 12-Gauge Shotgun, and one more in the lineup. Alongside the main campaign, the package includes a handful of extra missions.
Playing together online
The multiplayer side supports Cross-Play and covers several game modes: Deathmatch, Team Play, Capture the Flag, and Kill The Fool With The Chicken. Deathmatch is free-for-all shooting, Team Play splits players into sides, and Capture the Flag has teams grabbing each other's flag. Kill The Fool With The Chicken is the odd one out and the reason to try it at least once with a lobby of friends. Because Cross-Play is on, your group can link up regardless of where each person is running the game.
What to know before you saddle up
This is a 1990s linear boomer shooter at heart: levels are straightforward, and the tone is cartoonish rather than realistic, though the game is tagged Violent. The remaster adds high-resolution uncompressed cutscenes and updated visuals for weapons, characters, and enemies, all recreated from archived art and styled to match the original look and full color palettes. If you prefer the classic experience, an in-game toggle lets you switch back to the original version of Outlaws. Visuals go up to 4K at 120FPS, and modern gamepad support brings a weapon wheel, rumble, and motion/gyro controls, so controller players are well looked after. There are 26 Achievements to chase, plus a Vault packed with behind-the-scenes material for anyone who wants to dig into how the game was made.
