What Hats and Hand Grenades is

Hats and Hand Grenades is a free-to-play cover-based twin-stick shooter with a pixelated, top-down look. You shoot guns, throw grenades, take cover, and steal hats from the people you kill. The arenas are colorful, each one has its own artwork and color palette, and the environments are destructible, so cover does not stay put for long. The soundtrack is original music by Roderic Russell and DJ Beatza Hut. The game can be played alone, but it is built around playing with other people.

How a group plays it together

Multiplayer versus runs up to 6 players, either local on the couch or online with Steam friends. Pick teams or go free-for-all, then fight over the hats. The Steam features list online PvP, and the tags include Local Multiplayer, so both setups are covered. Controller support is listed as well, which makes passing a pad around in the same room straightforward.

Before you start

The tags mark the game as Gore and Violent, so expect blood alongside the bright pixel art. It is a twin-stick shooter, so you need one stick to move and one to aim, with cover as a core mechanic rather than something you can ignore. Since arenas are destructible, the layout changes as the match goes on and the cover you picked can get blown apart. The game is free to play, so there is no barrier to getting your group into a match.
