Fighting with a hat in King of the Hat

King of the Hat is a 2D party platformer built around one simple idea: your hat holds your soul. You throw it to attack, to defend, and to bait other players into a bad move. The catch is that a hat sitting on the ground is a death trap for its owner — if anyone jumps on it, you die. So every throw is a gamble between a strong offensive tool and a way to lose the round. When you launch your hat, it catches fire and becomes invulnerable, which means it can smash through other players and block incoming flaming hats. That single rule gives the fights their rhythm: throw, dodge, retrieve, punish.

Playing together with your group

The game supports 2 to 4 players, and matches work as fast, competitive rounds where everyone is trying to crush the others' hats. Online PvP is available, and a Friendpass lets one person join a friend for free, so a group can get into a match without everyone owning a copy. The basic controls are easy to pick up, which keeps casual sessions moving, but the depth shows up when two players start reading each other's throws and baiting each other into leaving a hat exposed. It fits a group that wants short, loud rounds rather than a long campaign.

Setting up the chaos you want

Before you start, know that the rules are adjustable. You can change the rule set, add power-ups, and play around level hazards, which is where the real variety comes from — the same arena plays very differently once hazards and power-ups are in the mix. Expect a pixel-art, cartoony look with a colorful, family-friendly tone and a fair amount of meme-flavored humor. The platforming and PvP tags tell you what the core loop is: move, throw, survive. Pick a ruleset your group agrees on, then let the hats fly.
