Emergence Day begins

Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person shooter set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. You follow Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago through the first hours of Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde erupts from below and the fight for survival starts. The campaign is built as an origin story, with a darker and grittier tone than earlier entries. Familiar enemies come back more threatening, and new creatures and villains are added to push the horror further. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, with 4K resolution and up to 60FPS across Campaign and Multiplayer on capable hardware.

Playing it with your group

You can play the campaign alone or rally up to four players online. Beyond the story there are two co-op and competitive modes to group up in. Horde Siege is the returning PvE wave survival mode, reworked for larger maps, more players, and bigger battles: a four-player squad picks a class from Assault, Marksman, Medic, or Breacher, fights back the Locust, and can team up with other squads on shared objectives and world bosses. Surviving earns rewards that unlock customization and improve your loadout for the next match. Versus is the PvP side, with refined 4v4 modes on new maps plus fan-favorite ones, split into Ranked playlists for climbing and Social playlists for a more relaxed match. Competitive multiplayer supports up to 8 players across supported platforms, and optional account linking lets you send cross-platform invites and carry progress with roaming saves.

Combat and setup notes

Cover-based combat is the core of the series and returns here, now paired with modernized movement: you can jump, vault, slide, and flank with more freedom and verticality. Fan-favorite weapons come back reimagined, alongside new ones built for close-quarters fighting. Expect gore and a horror-leaning atmosphere throughout. On PC you get borderless, exclusive, and windowed display modes, uncapped frame rates on capable hardware, ultrawide support at 21:9 and 32:9 for gameplay and menus, and KBM/controller remapping, plus optional HDR10, ray-traced lighting, reflections, and shadows. The game is optimized for handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally. A Microsoft Account is required, and online play needs a broadband connection with a significant initial download and possible future updates. The game also carries a warning about flashing lights and patterns.
