What Company of Heroes 2 is

Company of Heroes 2 is a real-time strategy game set in the Second World War, built on the Essence Engine 3.0. You command squads, vehicles and tanks across battlefields where terrain and visibility matter as much as raw firepower. The TrueSight system models what your units can actually see, so line of sight shapes every engagement, and the cover system rewards placing squads behind walls, buildings and natural obstacles rather than leaving them in the open. The game leans on combined arms and hard and soft counters: a tank will not go down easily to a squad of riflemen, so you need the right tool for the right target. Dynamic weather also changes how you plan moves and attacks across a mission.

Playing it with your group

The base game comes with two multiplayer armies from the Eastern Front, the Red Army and the Wehrmacht Ostheer, and multiplayer standalones let you play on any map against anyone who owns any Company of Heroes 2 product. That means a group where only some people own expansions can still meet on the same maps. Multiplayer covers both competitive and co-operative play, including online PvP and online co-op, so you can fight each other or work through matches side by side. Steam Achievements, Stats and Steam Cloud carry your progress across sessions, and Steam Workshop lets the group share community content. Family Sharing is available for the game.

Armies and expansions

The Western Front Armies adds two more multiplayer factions: the Oberkommando West, an aggressive army with specialized elite units in limited numbers, and the US Forces, an expeditionary corps with flexible combined arms tactics but weaker heavy armor. The British Forces brings in a tech tree built around the constant trade-off between mobility and defense, with distinctive units and abilities such as the Churchill Crocodile flamethrower tank and the RAF glider. Ardennes Assault is a separate single-player campaign for the US Forces around the Battle of the Bulge: 18 scenarios played non-linearly across the Ardennes, choosing between three companies, customizing their abilities, with company health persisting between missions so your decisions carry forward.

Before you start

The base game includes a single-player campaign where you play a Soviet commander of the Red Army, fighting through brutal frontline conditions and harsh weather on the push toward Berlin. It is the intended way to learn the series' core ideas before taking them online. The expansions listed above are separate purchases, so check what each person in your group owns before you plan a session. Expect a game that asks for planning and positioning rather than fast clicking: unit placement, sight lines and the right counters decide most fights.
