A card battler that plays out on a grid

Cards and Castles Ultimate mixes collectible cards with grid-based tactics. You build a deck, then play it out on a tactical game board where where you put a unit matters as much as which card you played. Move your pieces, hold choke points, and let artillery wear down the enemy from range. The board effects are worth learning: chain lightning, cleaving attacks, and area spells can swing a whole column of units at once. It is easy to pick up and hard to play well, which suits a group that wants quick games with real decisions in them.

Deckbuilding across seven factions

Faction choice is the biggest decision before the match. There are seven of them: Vikings, Crusaders, Warlocks, Pirates, Ninjas, Druids, and Undead. You can combine two factions into one deck, so the pairings are where the interesting strategies live. ULTIMATE adds dual-color cards and a graveyard system, where slain units show up as ghosts behind your Castle. That opens up plays around casting from beyond the grave and resurrecting fallen enemies, including enemies you did not own. Maps also carry unique secondary objectives on top of the normal win condition, so there is a second thing to fight over while the main plan is running.

How a group plays it together

Matches are head to head against other players, and the game is fully cross platform, so friends on different devices are in the same pool with shared account progression. Beyond open matchmaking there is a story campaign, ranked play with a leaderboard, bot matches, custom lobbies, limited formats on rotation, spectator mode, and community tournaments. Spectator mode is the one to reach for when someone in the group is out of the round and wants to watch the rest instead of waiting.

Before you start

New cards unlock quickly and do not require payment, so a fresh account does not stay bare for long. Modes rotate on a weekly schedule, which means the format you liked last week may be a different one next week, and new expansion sets plus individual card releases keep arriving. Expect the card pool to shift under you and plan decks that can absorb new pieces rather than ones that depend on a single exact list.
