A text RPG where the AI runs everything
AI Roguelite is a text-based RPG where locations, NPCs, enemies, items, crafting recipes and game mechanics are all generated by an LLM. You explore an infinite world: an underwater city might hold weapons you would not expect, and the exits from each place are decided on the spot rather than drawn on a fixed map. Crafting works the same way — combine a wooden stick with a rock, or a computer chip with a zombie brain, and the AI decides what comes out based on the ingredient names. Combat is not built on traditional item stats. Whether an attack lands depends on the names and descriptions of what you use, how plausible the action is in the current story, and a dice roll against your attributes and skills. The AI writes out what happens, then reads its own story back to work out whether the enemy was killed, injured or unharmed. Every entity also gets an AI-generated illustration, rendered on your GPU or in the cloud. The tone leans parody and comedy, with heavy dialogue, branching choices and character customization.
Playing it with your group
The Steam feature Remote Play Together lets your friends join in from their own machines. You can also travel with up to four other party members, each with their own stats, abilities, items and perks, and take actions on their behalf — so one person driving the session can still move the whole party through fights and conversations. Choices matter throughout, which makes it easy to argue over what to try next and who should take the risky action.
Before you start
Actions can be blocked or fail when a plausibility or dice roll check is not met. This is intentional, and you can bypass those mechanics at any time through options or console commands. Text and image generation models are selectable: free cloud works out of the box, and there are paid cloud and custom API options that work with services like OpenRouter and LMStudio. An optional monthly subscription is linked in-game for more expensive LLMs and image services, but the base game runs fine with default settings at no extra cost. Players in China may be blocked from the official servers since Google services are blocked there; a VPN that does not block Google, or a custom API option, works around it.
