Making spells from kanji

AI Spellcraft is a turn-based battle game where you build a spell out of four kanji characters drawn from a random pool. Once your spell is set, the AI reads it and works out the damage, element, and effect it carries. The kanji you get are handed out randomly, so every round gives you a different set to work with. Your job is to spot the combinations that read like a real spell and land hard. The AI also describes what you cast, and those descriptions can come out in a dramatic, chuunibyou-flavored style straight out of a teenage fantasy.

Winning by being clever, not just strong

Big-looking spells are not a guaranteed path to victory. There are moments where a deliberately weak spell is the right call, so you have to decide when to swing for power and when to hold back. That flexibility is the core of the duel: reading the situation, weighing the kanji in front of you, and choosing a spell that fits the moment rather than the one that sounds loudest.

Playing with friends

The local versus mode puts two players on one PC, each competing for kanji characters and casting their own spells against the other. Steam Remote Play Together is supported, so a friend who is not in the same room can join the battle online. The game is tagged as singleplayer as well, so you can also play through it on your own.

Things to know before starting

Spell evaluation runs through the conversational AI ChatGPT provided by OpenAI, so depending on server load the game may take extra time to process a spell. If OpenAI changes the ChatGPT service, the game may be suspended or discontinued without prior notice. Keep that in mind when you sit down for a session, since a busy server can slow the pace of a duel.
