What Unless is

Unless is a retro pixel art speedrunning platformer set in the Forest of Worlds, which is withering along with the creative spark of every living thing. You venture into fantastical levels, gather the Golden Leaves inside them, and use them to avert the fate of a world without imagination. The run spans 4 distinct worlds and 66 finely tuned level screens, built to work for both newcomers and speedrunners. Clearing levels quickly earns Crystal Berries, which unlock Bonus Levels, so speed is woven into progression rather than being a separate afterthought.

Playing it together

The game is tagged as singleplayer and local co-op, and it supports Remote Play Together, so friends can join in over a connection as well as on the same screen. A cooperative Assist Mode is included to help players of all ages and ability see everything the game has to offer, which makes it a reasonable pick for a group with mixed skill levels. If you want to race each other instead, Shuffle Mode randomizes level connections and Leaf positions, and you can share seeds so everyone runs the same layout. There is also a Daily Challenge with its own leaderboard to compare against, plus Steam Leaderboards for chasing records.

Before you start

Speedrun Mode is worth knowing about: it shows an in-game timer, speeds up level transitions, and auto-skips dialogue sequences. Checkpoints are generous, so a failed attempt rarely costs much ground. The accessibility options are extensive and adjustable before or during play: game speed, customizable inputs, tweaks to jump and wall-cling behaviour, font selection and text scaling, high contrast UI, and reduced distraction modes. Expect a fast-paced 2D puzzle platformer with a colorful, cute look and a female protagonist; the difficulty comes from precision and routing rather than from punishing checkpoint placement.
