What Surfingers is

Surfingers is a 2D arcade runner built around one simple idea: you ride a wave and change its height to stay alive. The controls are up-and-down movement only, so you raise or lower the wave to duck under and clear whatever comes at you. The goal is to travel as far as you can without touching anything. Obstacles include ships, balloons, rocks, trees, bones and pyramids, and they arrive at a fast pace, so the difficulty comes from reading the next hazard and shifting height in time. The game comes from Digital Melody, the studio behind Timberman.

How a group plays it together

Surfingers supports Remote Play Together, so friends can join in from their own setups while one person owns the game. Because the whole control scheme is up and down, everyone can pick it up immediately without learning a button layout. The natural way to play in a group is to take turns on a run and compare how far each of you got, since the run ends the moment you clip an obstacle. Short rounds and instant restarts keep the rotation moving, and the shared goal of beating the previous distance gives each attempt something to aim at.

Worlds, characters and look

Runs move through different worlds: ocean, snow, desert and hell, plus caves and snowy hills along the way. The worlds change during play rather than sitting in a menu, so a single run can shift scenery and hazards as you progress. There are over 20 characters to choose from, unlocked through achievements or earned with stars, which gives you something to work toward between runs.

The visual style draws on 1970s California, colorful posters and the Surf Rock music genre, with a broad color palette used across the worlds. Surfing music runs alongside that look, so the soundtrack and the art point in the same direction.

Before you start

Expect a game that is easy to understand and hard to sustain: one input, one direction, and no margin for touching anything. The pace is quick, so the first runs are mostly about learning how fast the wave needs to move and how late you can leave a correction. Changing worlds and diagonal waves are what give the movement its feel, and that is where most of the challenge sits. Pick a character you like, settle into the rhythm of the music, and treat each run as a fresh distance to beat.
