What Soundodger+ is

Soundodger+ is a bullet hell mixed with a rhythm game. You move a small marker around a 2D field while bullets fly at you in patterns that are choreographed to the music. Almost every track has multiple difficulties, and each level is hand-made so the shapes and timing match the song. The roster covers more than 20 tracks in the main game plus over 30 extra levels included from the DLC, with music from artists like Disasterpeace, Danny Baranowsky and Austin Wintory. Hidden hearts are scattered through levels; grab one and it gives you a bit of insurance if you take a hit later, and carrying them to the end unlocks extra tracks and modes.

Playing together

Soundodger+ is built around singleplayer dodging, so a group plays it by taking turns and comparing runs rather than sharing one screen of action. Remote Play Together lets one person host and others join in over the internet, which is handy for watching someone else's attempt or passing the mouse around. The default control scheme is mouse only, so passing play is as simple as handing over the mouse. Zen mode removes the pressure of scoring when someone just wants to watch the patterns, and Slo-Mo gives a breather on a tough section. Smooth Listening keeps the music running without interruption, which matters when a group is hanging out and listening as much as playing.

Before you start

Expect a real difficulty curve. The game is tagged as difficult and fast-paced, and the store text notes that switching from mouse to keyboard or controller produces an unintentional difficulty spike, so stick with the mouse first. Auto-Gen builds a level instantly from your own music, and the Level Editor lets you hand-craft patterns down to the beat. Community levels have been accumulating for about a decade, including levels described as "impossible," so there is always something harder waiting once the built-in tracks are mastered.
