What Scrap Mechanic is
Scrap Mechanic is a survival sandbox built around a physics-heavy construction system. You were sent to a faraway agriculture planet as a robot maintenance mechanic, crash-landed, and found the field Farmbots running haywire and out for blood. Survival Mode is the full story experience: a dynamically generated open world filled with enemies, treasure and dangerous robots, with a journey down toward the planet's core and its dark secrets.
The building side is the heart of it. You get over 400 building parts to work with, so vehicles, automated machines and secure bases are all on the table. There is farming to keep up: cultivate and water crops, defend the fields, and harvest materials for ammunition, advanced crafting recipes and rewards. Digging is another route — attach drills to a creation and work through the abandoned mine underground for treasure and secrets. Combat stays inventive: haywire robots roam the world, and the Spudgun is what you keep ready. Your mechanic can be dressed up with mix-and-match clothing pieces, unlocked through missions, vendors and garment boxes hidden in the world, some rarer than others.
Playing it with friends
Co-op and online co-op are the point of the game here. You and your group team up in Survival Mode, pool the work of gathering and farming, and build vehicles and bases together to protect yourselves and your valuables. Machines you engineer are shared tools for the whole group — one person digs, another drives, another holds the line against robots.
Beyond the open world, Challenge Mode gives you the Master Mechanic Trials: 40 challenges covering the skills a mechanic needs before heading into the wide-open world. You can also create your own challenges and share them with friends, so the group can hand each other custom tests.
Before you start
Creative Mode is where the building tools are laid out without survival pressure — pick parts, build a transforming vehicle or a walking house, and iterate with friends. Mod support adds over 1000 player-made building parts on top of the base set, and the Steam Workshop plus the built-in level editor mean shared creations and challenges travel between players easily. Steam Cloud handles saves, and Family Sharing is available if someone in the house wants to try it. The game runs in third person, and single-player is supported if the group isn't online, but the intended shape of Scrap Mechanic is friends building and surviving together.
