Sewing quilts, one scrap at a time
Quilts and Cats of Calico is a digital board game based on Calico. Your job is to build a quilt out of patterned fabric scraps, placing each piece so the colors and patterns line up in scoring combinations. Completing a design earns points, and you can sew on buttons to attract cats, each of which has its own preferences for bedding patterns. The rules are simple to pick up but the decisions add up: every scrap you place shapes what you can do later. Cats wander onto the board while you play, sitting on the quilt, napping, or getting in the way. You can pet them or shoo them off.
Playing together
The game supports 1 to 4 players, so a group can quilt together in multiplayer or split off into solo play. Online multiplayer is cross-platform, which means you can invite friends directly or queue for ranked matches against random opponents. Local multiplayer and Remote Play Together are also available for people who want to share a screen. If your group wants something calmer, the solo mode lets you play against AI at varying difficulty levels, which works well for learning the patterns before facing real opponents.
The story campaign
Beyond the standard scenarios, there is a story mode campaign set in a city of cat-worshippers, inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli. You take the role of an itinerant quilter trying to rise through the city hierarchy while an opponent works to dominate the world of humans and cats. Along the way you meet friends and cats whose help matters. The campaign also introduces variations on the standard rules and mechanics, plus new scenarios not found in the familiar gameplay.
Customization and atmosphere
You can create your own cat: name it, pick its fur color, and dress it in different outfits, then have it appear on the board during play. Player portraits and backgrounds can be changed too. The soundtrack was composed by Pawel Górniak, who also wrote the music for the digital version of Wingspan. Expect a relaxed pace, colorful 3D visuals, and turn-based play that suits groups who want something thoughtful rather than fast.
