What Make Way is

Make Way is a top-down multiplayer racer where the course is not fixed. You grab track pieces from a pick and mix menu and snap them together, then race the track you have made. Expect loops, seesaws, corkscrews, train crossings and helter skelters, with hazards, boost pads and barriers layered on top. It borrows the chaos of games like Micro Machines and Mashed, and the build-then-play flow of Ultimate Chicken Horse. The World Tour update is already included, which brings Team Mode, eight extra vehicles, and three new environments: Tropical Island, Lunar Surface and Toy Room.

Playing with a group

Six racers drive on the same screen or online with cross-platform multiplayer. Online PvP and Remote Play Together are available, so you can mix local friends with people in Discord. Each round, everyone builds before anyone drives: work together on the layout or sabotage each other with a barrier in the wrong place or a boost pad over a curve. Then it is a fight across checkpoints. Weapons and power-ups litter the route, and checkpoints double as respawn points, so taking someone out buys you only a little time before they come back with a giant mallet or a rooftop-mounted shotgun. After the round, new track pieces bolt on, and the course keeps growing until a winner is crowned. Team Mode lets you work with teammates against the rest of the lobby.

Before you start

There are more ways to tune a session than the basic mode lets on. You can turn traps and safety barriers on or off, and rulesets are fully customisable, so you can decide how forgiving the turns are or leave them as perilous as possible. Performance in a race scores bonus points, so finishing well matters as much as winning. As you play, new track pieces and hazards unlock, and more vehicles join the garage, which is where the longer-term progression lives. The solo developer behind Make Way previously worked on Toybox Turbos and the Micro Machines series, which explains the small-car-on-a-big-table feel.
