A physically simulated fantasy sandbox

Lay of the Land is a sandbox adventure set in a fantasy world where nearly everything is physically simulated. Fires spread and burn, sand collapses, water flows, and pockets of gas suffocate. The world is generated procedurally with layered simulations, so water carves channels through valleys and roads wind their way through the terrain, organically connecting locations together. You will find many distinct biomes filled with unique locations and wildlife, from overgrown ruins and deadly temples to winding caverns and jagged mountains.

Fighting, looting and surviving

Combat gives you real choices. Charge in with melee weapons and armor, keep your distance with ranged armaments, or master the arcane arts and unleash powerful spells. The world is fully destructible, so you can collapse the roof of a cave onto your foes, fell a tree to crush a dangerous monster, or blast through a wall to get the drop on your enemies. Crafting works through a physically based interaction system rather than menus alone: lay sticks, rope, and flint on the ground to assemble a basic axe, place food into a campfire to cook it, or smelt raw ore, craft clay molds, and cast metal parts to forge new weapons. Weapons can be upgraded for damage, durability, attack speed and more, and infused with elemental effects such as fire to burn enemies over time, ice to slow targets, or lightning to chain attacks to nearby foes.

Building with voxel tools

The voxel building system goes well beyond square walls and roofs. Use the cylinder tool to create circular structures, top them with sloped roofs using the cone tool, raise or lower terrain with sculpting tools, and draw paths directly onto the ground. Prefabs including windows, fences, and slopes speed things up, and you can design your own custom prefabs to duplicate decorations or entire structures. Furnishings such as tables, chairs, and shelves let you finish the inside.

Playing together

Lay of the Land supports co-op play, and Steam Remote Play Together is available for groups who want to join in.
