Running a European Superpower
Imperial Ambitions is a 4X strategy game set during the Age of Discovery and Renaissance. You take control of one of the European superpowers and lead it through to the age of imperialism. The goal is to discover and colonize the world, allocate your labor force, monopolize markets, fight tactical battles, and maintain order. The game features over 40 unique resources and goods, along with specific mechanics for trading, ore discovery, and resource replantation. You will also face controversial choices, including slave raiding and crime syndicates.
Agents, Movement, and Tactical Wars
You rule your empire through agents, such as the Gentleman and the Shadowmaster. The movement mechanics are distinct from other games, featuring military column movements and ship mechanics. Large armies move in column formation on the campaign map, which makes movement slower and requires more tactical planning before a battle begins. Regiments can be split from the main army for small tactical excursions or to sneak into enemy lines for crossfire. Because of this, you must pay attention to avoid leaving gaps on your frontline. Units continue firing until the end of the turn.
Managing Social Classes and Traits
Society is divided into five classes: slaves, peasants, apprentices, artisans, and masters. Aside from slaves, citizens progress through four tiers, with each step offering increased capabilities but requiring different resources. Education is the key for citizens to climb this ladder. Higher classes provide more labor but require unique luxury resources. Units and agents must be trained from their respective classes, so you need to find the optimal balance between them.
The game includes a dynamic Trait System where people, soldiers, agents, and populations are shaped by their experiences, culture, religion, wealth, health, and living conditions. Traits affect behavior, loyalty, action points, migration, combat performance, and whether units obey orders. A starving army or a persecuted population may not behave as expected. Food shortages can lead to hunger, which lowers efficiency and increases unrest. Hungry soldiers start the game with decreased action points. Plague can destroy labor, spread fear, and create refugees. Protests usually grow from accumulated pressure and can escalate into riots, which damage order and reduce labor. Military control can calm riots, but harsh repression leaves trauma and hatred behind.
