What Hellish Quart is

Hellish Quart is a physics-based 3D sword fighting game set in the 17th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Fights are built on active ragdolls and real-time physics, with motion-captured fencing techniques behind every swing. You attack from four angles using the four face buttons on a gamepad, and button combinations open up special attacks and combos. When you are not attacking, your character drops into a defensive stance and autoguard blocks incoming strikes. Timing, technique, speed, measure, and wits decide the duel, the same way they do in real fencing. Character models use 3D-scanned, reconstructed clothing from the period, and the roster covers the sword fighter archetypes of the era, including Zaporozhian Cossacks, Polish Hussars, Tatars, Turkish Janissaries, Swedish Reiters, and French Musketeers.

Playing together

Multiplayer is local only: two players share one PC, with no online play. Sit down together and pick local multiplayer, quick fights, or safe sparring. Safe sparring lets you practice with wooden weapons or train in modern HEMA gear, which is a calm way to learn the four attack angles before you fight for real. Remote Play Together is listed as a Steam feature, so one of you can host and the other join from their own setup. The game also has an optional VR mode if either of you wants to try it.

Before you start

Hellish Quart is in Early Access and still in development, so expect things to change. The gamepad is the control scheme to learn: four buttons for four attack angles, plus combinations for specials and combos. Autoguard covers you while you are not attacking, but it does not replace good timing and measure. Alongside local multiplayer, the single-player side offers a cinematic story mode, arcade mode, quick fights, and survival mode with online leaderboards.
