Luchador brawling across two worlds
Juan Aguacate is an agave farmer who finds a Legendary Luchador mask and takes up the fight against Carlos Calaca, who has kidnapped El Presidente's Daughter and plans to merge the World of the Living with the World of the Dead. This is a Metroidvania-style action-platformer set in a world inspired by traditional Mexican culture and folklore, with lively towns, dark forests, flowery canals and fiery volcanoes to cross. Combat is melee-focused, with an extensive move list, an advanced combo engine and anti-gravity grabs. Your combat moves double as movement tools, so the Rooster Uppercut and Frog Slam are as much about getting around as they are about hitting enemies, and "Intenso" turbo-combat mode is there for when a fight needs to end fast.
Playing together on one screen
The game supports drop in/out 4-player local co-operative play on the same screen. Each player swaps between the Worlds of the Living and the Dead independently, which means two people can stand in different dimensions at once and still fight side by side. That independence is the main wrinkle to coordinate: terrain that is solid in one world may be impossible in the other, so a group moving through a section needs to keep track of where everyone is standing. Remote Play Together is available if your group wants to play over a connection rather than in the same room.
Before you start
This is a difficult game with multiple boss characters, each with their own back story, plus a wide range of foes and elite-class enemies. Expect to die and retry sections rather than coast through. The world is sprawling, so progress comes from gaining new powers that open routes you could not take earlier. Custom costumes can be created and shared through Steam Workshop, and costume unlocks carry across save games. Multiple save slots are supported, so a group can keep separate runs. This purchase also includes Guacamelee! Gold Edition, the original version of the game from before the new powers, levels, enemies and gameplay additions that define Super Turbo Championship Edition.
