What Gatewalkers is

Gatewalkers is a cooperative action RPG with survival elements, played from an isometric view. You take the role of a Gatewalker, one of the chosen few who can pass through the Gate and reach the worlds on the other side, in order to save your own. Each time you go through the Gate you land in a different procedurally generated world with its own terrain, plants and creatures, so no two expeditions play out the same. Combat is skill-based and has no auto targeting: your skills can miss, enemies can be dodged, and positioning, timing and a balanced use of your abilities decide most fights. Between fights you gather resources, discover recipes, find or build a crafting station and make the items you need.

Playing it as a group

You team up with up to three other players, so a full group is four. The whole design leans on splitting the work: one player starts a fire so the others can warm up, another builds a tent so the team can rest, someone keeps watch and calls out what is moving in the dark. Surviving alone in an unknown world is hard, and the game is built around the idea that a coordinated team at least stands a chance. Combat also rewards coordination, since team synergy matters alongside individual skill use. You follow the orders given by the Guild while you are out there, and staying alive is the main objective.

Before you start

Think about loadout before you leave, because what you carry decides what you can do once you arrive. There are no predefined classes: every item gives you a unique set of skills, so a build is whatever you wear. Heavy armor plus a healing staff, for example, lets you hold the front line and restore health for the people behind you. Recipes and resources are spread across different worlds, so expect to raid several places before you can craft what you want. Each world type brings its own survival mechanic and its own hazards — toxic or unbreathable atmosphere, darkness, penetrating cold, extreme weather, lack of water — and on some worlds finding food, water or wood for a fire may simply be impossible. Adapt your strategy on the spot and decide fast, because you never know what is waiting around the corner.

Note that this is an alpha version: the open alpha test servers are currently closed, and information about upcoming tests is announced through the developers' Discord server.
