A Cold War command simulation

Flashpoint Campaigns: Southern Storm is a grand tactical wargame set in 1989. You take the role of a force Commander, leading battalion, brigade, or regimental forces. Your job is to plan the fight, issue orders, and set Standard Operating Procedures, then shape the battle through maneuver and intent. The simulation covers Southern Germany on more than 40 maps, with real-world locations rendered at 20km x 15km or larger. Each hex represents 500m of militarily significant terrain, and a battle runs from 4 to 24 hours of in-game time.

How the WEGO turns work

The engine runs on asynchronous WEGO turns. You issue your orders, then watch a variable amount of time play out on the battlefield. After that, you issue or adjust orders to react to what actually happened as your battle plan executes. This loop is the core of play: commit to a plan, observe the result, then adapt.

Your forces and the battlespace

Your forces are arranged in maneuver units of companies, platoons, and sections, covering tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, infantry squads and teams, recon forces, engineers, air-defense and anti-tank systems, helicopters, and more. You also have off-map assets such as long-range artillery, rockets, and airstrikes. The battlespace models Electronic Warfare, Air Superiority, realistic weather, line of sight and fire, terrain and elevation, smoke and mines, plus human factors like training, morale, and readiness. Battles can happen at any time of day and in any weather. Information dialogs, map overlays, and range rings are available to help you read the situation and understand what your forces can do.

Nations, scenarios, and modding

You lead forces from the United States, France, Canada, West-Germany, Soviet Union, East-Germany, and Czechoslovakia, with equipment from 1980 to 1989. The game includes many replayable scenarios and campaigns, playable solo or with allied nations fighting alongside you. Each nation carries its own National Characteristics, Command Parameters, and Orders of Battle, and the data tables are packed with era-specific troops and weapon systems. As a toolkit, it lets you create your own scenarios and campaigns, and go deeper by creating or modifying game data, artwork, and sound effects, all supported by detailed documentation. Online PvP is available for playing against other commanders.
