Command a Cold War battlegroup
WARNO is a real-time strategy game set in the summer of 1989, where the Cold War turns into a hot conflict across a divided Germany. You command hundreds of Cold War-era units on detailed battlefields, from hills and forests to villages, rivers, bridges, and industrial zones. The game features more than 1000 different military units, including main battle tanks, infantry, mobile SAM systems, self-propelled artillery, scout helicopters, strike aircraft, and interceptors. Six nations are available, split between NATO (U.S., West Germany, United Kingdom, France) and the Warsaw Pact (Soviet Union, East Germany), each with its own distinct arsenal. Before a battle, you build and customize your own battlegroup from famous military formations and brigades, deciding on your economy of forces. The Armory lets you inspect and compare every unit in detail before you commit to it.
Play together online
WARNO supports online co-op and online PvP, so your group can fight side by side or against each other. Skirmish missions can be played solo, in co-op, or in multiplayer against an enhanced AI or human opponents. When facing other players, matches range from ranked 1v1 and team games (2v2 up to 4v4) to massive 10v10 battles. In these fights, the dynamic frontline shifts as you advance, and controlling objectives like bridges and industrial zones matters as much as winning individual engagements. Coordination with your teammates is key: use scouts to spot ambushes, position artillery and air support, and watch for outflanking maneuvers as you push the line forward.
Two ways to wage war
Beyond real-time battles, WARNO includes a turn-based layer called Army General. There are 5 large campaigns centered on the Fulda Gap area in 1989, where you move hundreds of units and formations down to platoon level across a strategic map. Alongside these, 8 scripted Operations give you focused tactical missions with a story. This means your group can split duties: some players handle the turn-based campaign planning while others jump into real-time skirmishes. Commands can be issued during pre-combat deployment, and tools like Rules of Engagement and AI-assisted Smart Orders help manage the complexity. Expect a steep but rewarding learning curve, since combat rewards positioning, combined arms, and mastery of your units over brute force.
