What DEVOUR is

DEVOUR is a first-person horror survival game built around one job: break the goat demon Azazel's hold on possessed cultists before they drag you to hell. Each themed map gives you a new manifestation of Azazel, a new environment to move through, new items to collect, fiends to fight off, and forbidden rituals to perform. The core loop is a race against time — find the key ritual items, some of which might be alive and unwilling, and complete the banishment. Your only means of defence is a UV flashlight, so most of the time you are running, screaming, hiding, or working a ritual rather than shooting your way out.

Playing it as a group

DEVOUR is built for 1-4 players in online co-op, and you take control of up to 4 cult members working together. Coordination is the whole point: someone gathers ritual items, someone keeps watch, someone runs interference while the possessed cultist closes in. The game has in-game positional voice chat, so you hear where your friends are, and a server browser lets you find other players if your group is short. A single session lasts up to an hour, and the developers describe it as needing a focused team and perfect execution. There is also a single player mode, aimed at hardcore players, where you do all the screaming yourself.

What to know before starting

Difficulty climbs as a run goes on. The possessed cultist's rage and speed increase over time, and the number of fiends they spawn grows with them, so early mistakes get expensive later. Locked doors, ritual objects and item spawns are randomized, and the AI is unpredictable, which is why no two playthroughs line up. Between runs you earn experience, which raises your Cult Rank and earns Ritual Tokens; those unlock Perks that can decide whether you live to banish another demon. Nightmare mode exists for when the normal run stops feeling like a challenge. VR support is included at no extra cost if you want that version.

One warning worth taking seriously: the game contains flashing lights that may be unsuitable for people with photosensitive conditions, along with loud jump scares. It also carries gore, violence and sexual content tags, so it is not one to hand to anyone sensitive to that material.
