A twin-stick shooter built from voxels

Critical Annihilation is a twin-stick shoot 'em up where everything is made of tiny voxels. The voxel tech is used to make the explosions and destruction the main event: everything is destructible to its core, so fights leave a mess of scattered cubes rather than tidy hit markers. The game is in Early Access, so expect it to still be getting work done on it. It's the same game that Markiplier and JackSepticEye played as Critical Mass, now with updated art and updated code for a fuller, more action-packed experience.

The campaign

Your home planet gets invaded by aliens and you take up arms with the rest of the planet to annihilate every alien in sight. Pushing forward carries you to new planets, including the Moon and Mars, until you reach the aliens' Mothership. Why these cliche aliens are attacking your cliche planet in the good old cliche way is for you to find out as you destroy every cube of their being. Expect a straightforward progression through locations rather than a branching story.

Playing it with friends

Remote Play Together is supported, so one person owns the game and others can join in over a stream of that session. Set it up from the group that way if you want to run through the levels together instead of each buying a copy. The twin-stick layout means one stick moves and the other aims and fires, which keeps the controls simple to pick up when someone new drops in.

Before you start

Go in expecting a fast, destructive shooter where the fun comes from tearing the voxel scenery and enemies apart, not from deep systems or a long story. The Early Access label is worth keeping in mind: art and code have already been updated once from the original Critical Mass version, and more changes can still land. The soundtrack is called out as a strong part of the package, so it's worth playing with sound on.
