Running the train through the wasteland

Apocalypse Express is an action management roguelike from Llamaware Studios. You conduct a train across a post-apocalyptic landscape, dealing with endless waves of enemies while keeping the whole machine alive. The journey starts when the player leaves the lifelong shelter they have known and heads out to see what remains of the outside world, charting a map around the few memories left from the old world. The train is the core of the game, and everything you do happens on and around it. Fires break out, resources need collecting, and enemies keep coming, so you are constantly deciding what to fix and what to ignore. The game is tagged as difficult, so expect a steep challenge rather than a relaxed ride.

How a group plays together

The Steam features list Remote Play Together, and the tags include Local Co-Op, so a group can join in and share the run. One person drives the train while others handle the chaos around it: putting out fires, collecting resources, and dispatching enemies. You will not always be able to take care of every part of the train at once, so the group has to think fast and split attention when things go sideways. Coordination matters more than raw reflexes here, since the train needs constant care while the wasteland keeps throwing threats at you.

Building your train before you start

Modules are the foundation of your build. You fill your wagons with modules, each giving a unique ability, and slots are limited so every choice counts. You can go full offense with cannons, rocket launchers, and turrets, or build defensively around disabling enemies, deflecting shots, and extinguishing fires. Other routes include a faster train that reaches destinations quicker or a mostly autonomous setup that handles much of the work on its own. Once a combination is in place, each module can be upgraded in dozens of ways, either boosting power or adding entirely new abilities. Relics are the last piece: you can only carry a few, but they bring powerful effects that can anchor a whole build. Mixing modules, upgrades, and relics is where the strategy lives, so plan your train before the run and adapt as the wasteland pushes back.
