Living boxes with box cutters

What The Box? is an online multiplayer shooter where every player is a living box trying to blend in with the ordinary boxes scattered around the arena. You can sprint around with your box cutter ready for close fights, or hold perfectly still and wait for someone to walk past before you strike. The environment places boxes randomly each round, so the hiding spots shift every match and no two rounds play out the same. You can play in first-person or third-person view, whichever gives you a better read on the scene. Matches support up to 10 players, and bots fill the room while you wait for others to join.

How your group plays together

Pick a room, tweak the settings to suit your group, and jump into one of 6 game modes built for different playstyles. In BOXES, the classic timed deathmatch, you get 5 minutes to rack up kills. You start with a single bullet that never reloads, so your only way to restock is to take down another player. The box cutter works up close, but pulling it out makes you visible to everyone nearby. A team deathmatch mode puts you and your teammates against the other side for 5 minutes of kill hunting. Another mode hands one player the juggerbox role: only the juggerbox scores points by killing, while everyone else teams up to kill it and steal that power. The kingdom mode spawns special areas around the map at regular intervals; stand alone in one and you earn a point every 3 seconds, but anyone else entering makes it contested until only one box remains. The tape mode sends your team after the opposing team's packing tape, which you carry back to your base, and the team with the most tape wins.

Before you start

There is a level editor for building your own maps, plus Steam workshop integration so you can play levels other players have made. The soundtrack is an original score by Thiago Adamo. Since hiding is the core of the game, expect rounds where standing still and watching pays off more than charging in, and expect the box cutter to betray your position the moment you draw it.
