What Touhou Crisis is

Touhou Crisis is a short, arcade-style shooting-gallery boss battler. You take on a single boss with your gun, your reflexes, and a second, bigger gun. It is a derivative fan work of the Touhou Project series, not affiliated with Team Shanghai Alice, and the store text asks players to support the official games as well. The game was originally built in 72 hours for the 6th Touhou Fan Game Jam and has since been polished into a complete experience. Everything, from the shooting to the interface itself, was designed around lightgun play, so the whole package leans hard into that classic arcade feel.

How a group plays it

You can play offline solo as a one-man army, or bring a friend in online. Co-op mode lets the two of you take the boss down together. If you would rather compete, versus mode has you fight for the high score instead of cooperating. You pick between two playable characters: Reimu with her powerful shotgun, or Marisa with her full-auto assault rifle. Aiming works with either a mouse or a lightgun, so a group can mix hardware without fuss.

Story and setting

One spring day a large crate lands in a shrine courtyard and a shrine maiden and her magician friend go through the guns and ammunition inside. Unfamiliar with kinetic warfare, they treat the weapons as toys until sunset, when a rare guest shows up at the shrine gates. The shrine maiden later sums it up as: "So anyway, I started blastin'". There are also UFOs involved, which the game blames on a probable Myouren Temple conspiracy.

Before you start

Difficulty is fully in your hands. Hard mode, Lunatic mode, Easy Modo — you build your own difficulty level. That includes gameplay modifiers such as infinite lives for an easy power fantasy, or a single life if you want it rough. Expect a short, first-person, on-rails session rather than a long campaign, and note that the boss battles are bullet hell encounters where reading patterns and keeping your aim steady matters more than movement.
