What Super Mutant Alien Assault is
Super Mutant Alien Assault is a 2D pixel-art arcade platformer shooter set aboard a space freighter. Three fleets of ships are carrying the last humans in cryostasis away from a doomed Earth while aliens pursue them, and the lowly security droids are the ones left to fight. You play through rapid-fire single-screen levels: each room gives you an objective, and hordes of enemies arrive to stop you from clearing it. Rooms are drawn from a pool of platform layouts, objective types, enemies and vending machines, so the combination changes every time. Between rooms you get a short breather before the next one starts.
The main hazard is time. Aliens left alive too long get mutated by the ship's radiation into bigger, nastier versions of themselves, so killing them quickly matters as much as surviving. Movement is the core skill: in the tight confines of the freighter, standing still is not an option, and dodging around enemies is as important as your aim. Clear the objective fast, kill everything before it mutates, then move on.
Playing it with friends
You can take the mutant hordes on alone or team up in local co-op with a friend. Two-player mode adds complications you have to manage together: explosives can hurt each other through friendly fire, and item and health pack drops have to be shared or fought over. The game also supports Remote Play Together, so a friend can join from their own setup. Coordination around grenade use and who grabs the health packs is a big part of co-op play.
Unlocks and variety
A large set of weapons, sidearms, special abilities, perks, explosives, defense moves and character skins waits to be unlocked. Every unlockable joins the pool of random ingredients, which means more options each run but also more combinations to learn. Vending machines in each room spawn weapons and grenades you cannot predict, while crate drops carry special abilities, sidearms, perks and defense moves at random. Mastering how individual pieces work on their own and how they combine is what carries you across all three galaxies.
Before you start
Expect a difficult, fast-paced arcade game where quick thinking and rapid reflexes decide whether you live or die. Levels are short and relentless, with no long downtime between them, and the randomized rooms mean no two runs hand you the same loadout or layout. Going in willing to learn each unlockable and to keep moving is the fastest way to get a handle on it.
