Building and running a space station
Stationeers puts you in charge of constructing and managing a space station, either alone or online with friends. You start with basic needs to cover: power, heat, resources, and atmosphere. From there the demands grow as the station does, and you end up engineering solutions for all of them. The game is systems oriented, so most of your time goes into planning how things connect rather than into combat or scripted missions. Your construction choices matter — well-designed architectural, atmospheric, and electrical plans pay off, and sloppy ones cause problems later.
The systems you have to keep track of
The atmosphere system models temperature, pressure, combustion, gas mixtures, water, and fire, so leaks, bad mixes, and heat buildup are real concerns. Physics applies to dynamic items in the world, including wall fatigue and explosive decompression, meaning a weak hull can fail on you. Mining happens on deformable voxel terrain across planets and asteroid belts, and the environments themselves are hazardous. Ore you bring back goes through machines — smelters, sorters, centrifuges, stackers, conveyors, fabricators — to become goods for further construction. Farming and livestock are part of the station's ecosystem rather than a side activity, since growing plants feeds into keeping things running.
Playing together and automating
Online co-op lets you and your friends split the work: someone mines, someone runs the factory line, someone handles power and atmosphere. Everything the station needs is built and managed by the group, so coordination matters as much as individual skill. A logic system runs throughout the base and can automate nearly any part of it, and you can write programs using integrated circuits and assembly code to take over repetitive tasks. As the station grows, automation stops being a luxury and becomes how you keep up with demand.
Before you start
Stationeers is in Early Access and is aimed at players who want depth: full use of these systems comes from knowledge and practice, so expect a learning curve rather than instant results. Resource and time pressure shape your early designs, and you will likely redesign things once you understand the systems better. Modding support covers many aspects of the game through the Steam Workshop, and the game is built for multithreading to help with performance and scalability. Space is empty and the planets are unforgiving, so plan your first steps carefully.
