What STAR WARS Battlefront puts you into

STAR WARS Battlefront (Classic, 2004) is an action shooter from Pandemic Studios that drops you straight into the battles of the films. You pick a soldier type, each with its own weapons and capabilities, and fight on planets drawn from across the Star Wars saga. You can play in first person or third person, so you can choose the view that suits you. Every weapon and vehicle you see on the field is available to use: man a turret, climb into a vehicle, or stay on foot and push the front line. The four factions are the Rebels, the Imperials, clone troopers, and battle droids, and you pick a side before each fight.

Playing it with your group

Online PvP is where the group play happens. Up to 32 players can join a single massive battle, and you can team up with friends to take the Empire head on or crush the Rebellion. The store text also lists co-op, so there is a way to play alongside others against the AI rather than only against each other. Conquering the galaxy planet by planet is the shared goal: work together, hold positions, and push through the maps as a unit. Because soldier types differ in weapons and capabilities, splitting roles across the group lets you cover more of the battlefront at once.

Modes and things to know before starting

Single player has three modes. Instant Action throws you into a battle immediately. Galactic Conquest is the campaign-style map mode where you take the galaxy planet by planet. Historical Campaigns is the story-based mode that runs through the battles of Episodes I-VI from the perspective of each of the four factions. Vehicles are a big part of the game, with over 30 to pilot, including AT-ATs, X-Wings, and Snowspeeders, so expect vehicle combat alongside the ground fighting. The game is tagged as moddable, supports controllers, and carries a retro, classic feel from its 2004 origins, so the presentation is of its era rather than modern.
